Earlier this month, David Lustberg, the former transportation director for the Weston School District was fired for allegedly misappropriating fuel. A second employee, Rocco Popoli, who was a school grounds foreperson, was also busted in connection to the stolen fuel.
Both former employees were fired shortly after turning themselves into investigators. Both men have been charged with second-degree larceny and are scheduled to appear in state Superior Court on May 24 to respond to the charges against them.
Schools Superintendent William McKersie noted in an email to the school community that the district is implementing a new system for managing buses, with Marilyn Dietzman, of First Group Transportation and interim special education transportation coordinator Rachel Keneally coordinating route information.
Lustberg has reportedly been stealing fuel from the district for years, the investigation determined. McKersie noted that the misappropriated fuel has been reported to police and that Lustberg has also been ousted as the Weston High School softball team.
According to the district, there is video evidence of Lustberg on 37 occasions stealing more than 350 gallons of fuel with a value just short of $750. The stolen gas was reportedly taken after regular school hours during school weeks.
